Philippines Trip/Girls Getaway – Overview

(Now updated with links to all posts)

Most posts for a little bit will probably be about the Philippines trip. First I told you our purpose here:

Our trip to the Philippines had a very distinct and unique purpose. We invited girls that were trafficked into the sex trade to go on a “Girls Getaway” with us. We paid for everything. All they had to do is show up. Imagine telling girls that have been tricked, lied to and used that they are being given an all expense paid vacation to the beach with no strings attached. Imagine telling them they just have to get on a bus with people they don’t know early one morning when they get off work. Imagine how impossible this trip was. But God had a plan in mind. And twenty six girls showed up. We spent a week loving on them. We talked and swam and hiked. We played games and danced and sang. We ate together and painted our nails. And we told them they had an option. We told them about the Wipe Every Tear safe houses and the opportunity to go to school.

And pleaded for sponsors. (Update – STILL NEEDED)

Earlier I told you how I felt being home. But what about why we were there? Here’s an overview of our schedule/timeline. I’ll break each piece down in future posts. (Oh YES I am milking this for multiple posts)

May 26 – We flew out of Boise at 11:00am (pretty much the perfect departure time) and landed in Manila on May 27 at 11:00pm. There’s little to say about international flights. Well, there’s little to say if they go well. And thankfully ours did. It was long. We chased the sun which freaked out at least one team member. We were given hot towels on the Asian airline. Someone got air sick but was fine by the time we got to Manila. However, our send off is worthy of a post.

May 28 – We left for Angeles City where we spent the next three nights on Walking Street, talking to girls and inviting them on the Getaway. And our days recuperating or working with a local church in the slums. Being in AC was probably my favorite part of the trip. This will require multiple posts. (UPDATE: May 28 Part 1 and Part 2, May 29 entry HERE, May 30 Part 1 and Part 2)

May 31 – We returned to our home base in Manila to recover/prepare for the Getaway and meet the girls currently in safe-houses. We also went to visit some bars that contrasted the “glitz and glamour” of Angeles.

June 2 – We left for the 4 night Girls’ Getaway! There was much excitement and anticipation…and my roommates and I were almost  left behind. (Getaway Entry HERE)

June 6 – Back to Manila. Most of the team were at home base for the weekend. And there was much rejoicing about sleeping in a bed NOT covered by sand. (Maybe that was just me…)

June 7 & 8 – Eight of us visited Novotas. This proved to be another favorite part of the trip for me, as well as the hardest.

June 9 – We flew out at 12:15 from Manila (after a mild bit of concern that we would get to the airport on time despite leaving by 9:00 for the airport) and landed in Boise at….7 pm on the 9th. International travel! Currently the only way to time travel!

Stay tuned!
